A friend of mine is a famous and successful musician. He watched many of his peers ruin their lives with substance use. He never used.
I applaud your desision. A clear head and strong body is what you need to survive a musician’s lifestyle.
Also, you DON’T want to end up looking/sounding like KEITH RICHARDS!!!!

Ryan, you’re doing the right thing because it’s better for your health. Don’t worry what other people think. You can just visit them in jail when they get caught drinking and driving.

do what works for you and who cares what other people think of you?? you are a musician so you already have the groupies and the girls that will love you no matter what, it is all about YOU and YOUR life…think about what you like and what feels good to you!

    GOOD FOR YOU!
Seriously, this is a big deal for you. You have made a decision to not be like everyone else. If you are talented then drugs and drinking shouldn’t be what makes people think you’re cool. When I go to parties I’m the one showing off my car, and showing off my phone, and breaking up fights and introducing people. I’m not the one passed out on the sofa. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Don’t let the idea of “being lame” influence you because that’s not the case. It’s about taking care of yourself and strengthening youself.
If you’re like some of my friends who play and don’t do drugs, etc., you probably don’t mind other people doing it so long as they don’t start $hit, right? So be cool with them, and if they rib on you, just say with a cool face “You know, I’ve done it all my life, and now it’s time for a change. It’s just what I’ve decided. I’m too old to act so stupid.” And who the hell cares if a bunch of drunks don’t think your cool, right :) It’s your liver, it’s your lungs.

You have to do what you want to do for YOU – not for to her people in your social circle. I have stopped smoking and drinking at several times in my life to make my social life more interesting – but you have to want it for yourself before4 anything else can be done!

I say, GOOD FOR YOU, you made the right decision, If you feel this is better for YOU, (which you are so right!) who cares what other people think and say, it’s your body, right? And besides, maybe others will see all the positive changes in YOUR life, and want to better theirs as well!
    One last thing:
Even though I don’t know you, I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!

stand your ground! they are lame if they don’t except you. Tell then you are embracing new philosophies in life.

“Everything in moderation” has always been my motto. But if you feel those habits have been so consistant that you don’t know what it’s like to not have them around. I call that borderline dependency.
I recently got on “the wagon” myself. I’m an artist and am realizing that when my alcohol consumption goes down..productivity goes up. Atleast try it..and if you’re getting more physical activity and less of the bad stuff, I know your seratonin levels will increase and sleep will be waaaaayy more restful.
    good luck!

Hi recovering alcoholic here. Ya know I stopped drinking a year ago and all my friend still continue. I thought it would be hard but they have been great about it. I was told I would have to make new friends and leave the old as not to tempt myself but ya know what these people had been my friends for a very long time and I wasn’t about to give them up so I just made up my mind to stop boozing. No one busted my aggies for. I still go out to the clubs and we still have a great only now I remember it! As far as your fans go……they look up to musicians who aren’t all mess up…it may not have been like that back in the 70’s or 80’s but something seemed to change in the 90’s. It was cool to be a Sober Rock Star…same still holds true today. Plus you can really show off your talent. As far as the weed well, I still indulge occasionally but I’m a lot more focused these days. Good Luck and remember I can do this “JUST FOR TODAY”

I am 30. At 25 I hit a hard reality in life that it wasn’t a giant party, no matter how bad I wanted it to be. At 21 I recovered from a bad cocaine addiction. I developed it in high school. That made me drink more. I bartended and it got much worse. It is, YES, a waste of time, money and life. I quit drinking for a year at 25, and went back to school. I can drink once in a while now, glass of wine, Mojito at lunch with the girls, but no more that 3 times a month. I just had to get it under control so it wasn’t controlling me. I commend you on your decision. It’s something to be proud of that you don’t fall for peer pressure and it speaks volumes to those who love music and want to be in the industry that you can do so without being a drunken drain on society. Good Job and Good Luck to you. I hope you are being supported by your freinds.
