I just got out of a drug rehab. I feel good and I think I made the right choice. What am I supposed to do now? I’m 21 years old and I know that I have a good life ahead of me but I just can’t seem to figure out where to start. I can’t even go back to my old friends. They’re still holding pot sessions. I don’t want to risk my recent recovery. Any suggestions on what I can do to continue a healthy life?

Congratulations for making it! It’s always nice to hear news about people winning their fight against drugs. I think it’s a good decision to stay away from your pot-smoking old friends but if you really want to be a friend, I think you should take the initiative and convince them to enter a drug rehab too. Tell them about what you’ve been through and where you are now. There’s nothing better than helping other people get out of a bad habit.
You’re pretty young. Have you ever been to college? I think you should try it. I think it will do you well (just stay away from other pot-smoking people, okay?). If you want to, you can also get a job or something. Earn money by doing something you love. You can also do sports like football or badminton. If you want, you can pick a new hobby. Try painting or drawing. If you’re into music, you can also learn how to play a new instrument. Just have fun and live life but make sure you do it the right way.

You are already on the right track by thinking about how you are going to do.
First, remember your triggers and stay clear of them. You’ve come along way physically and mentally, and your life is worth a lot.
Find some things to join. A karate club, a book club, a soccer team. Something that will occupy you and help you meet new people.
Do some volunteer work that you will enjoy.
Go to support meetings, talk to your doctor regularly, call the rehab, etc.
Eat right, hit the gym to work out frustrations and go to an addictions counsellor.
You’ve done so well. I’m proud of you. Keep doing what you’re doing because you are on the right track. Believe in yourself, keep busy and stay positive.

Good for you!
You’ve made some great choices and nows the time to stick with them.
Pay attention to what they told you in rehab.
Pave a new way forward instead of going back to your old friends and habits and all those old ties, which are always stronger than you think.
Don’t put too much pressure on your self to start ‘doing something’. Just take small steps forward. You don’t need to have life all worked out. Who does?
Just take it a day at a time. Find things you enjoy – maybe exercise – or painting- or studying something. Focus on that, but take it slowly. Enjoy the small things in life – like the sunshine, music, coffee – whatever. Start building relationships with kind and stable people, and those who are the type of people you aspire to be. Don’t think too much about the past. Be quick to ask for help if you find yourself longing for the old life. You might feel lonely at first but its a good chance to learn to love yourself.
This is probably a pretty tough time for you right now, but hang in there and ‘this too shall pass’, and you’ll have a brand new life.
